Research Activities of the Associates

Many of the associates of AIMS are academic researchers. The results of their research, often published under their university or other affiliations, feed into training and advisory activities.

A central theme of the research is to examine policy issues that confront the international community in terms of the international public institutions that are called upon to deal with them.

International Public Management:

John Mathiason has undertaken to examine the emerging functions of the international public sector in terms of the services delivered by international organizations. An early paper dealt with the broader questions of function, entitled Managing the Global Commons. A more recent paper is entitled Managing Global Governance.

International Regulation of the Internet

John Mathiason and Charles Kuhlman are undertaking research on the process of creation of a governance regime for the Internet. They presented a paper for the March 1998 annual Convention of the International Studies Association entitled Who Will Give You Your Domain Name: International Regulation of the Internet. and have prepared a follow-up paper for the theme of the Internet at the annual convention of the International Telecommunications Society in Stockholm in June 1998 entitled An International Communication Policy: The Internet, international regulation & new policy structures.

An interview with John Mathiason appeared in El Nacional, one of the major daily newspapers in Venezuela on May 31, 1998 under the title "La ONU debe regular redes inform·ticas para garantizar equilibrio internacional".
